How can I find answers to other questions about methadone?

The Internet offers a vast wealth of information on medical topics, including addiction treatment and methadone-maintenance therapy. However, one must be cautious, as some websites communicate misinformation or opinions unsupported by science, or merely seek to promote particular products and services.

For starters, enter key words relating to your question in the “Site Search” box at the Addiction Treatment Forum website: http://www.atforum.com

For example, if you want to know more about cocaine use among MMT patients, enter: the words “methadone” and “cocaine” (without the quotation marks). This will provide a list of links to articles discussing those two topics. As more key words are entered, fewer links will be provided but they will be more specific to your question.

Another excellent search engine is provided by Google. See: http://www.google.com

This search engine is so thorough that, unless you enter a number of different key words relating to your question, it could provide thousands of links and many will not be relevant. Just entering “methadone” retrieves more than a half-million links. Entering “methadone cocaine males” narrows it down to about 10,000. For advanced users, instructions are available at the Google site for narrowing searches further.

For more technical information, an excellent resource is offered by PubMed at: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi

This free site allows searching of the entire database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine for research articles and other published documents on virtually any medical or healthcare topic. For most entries, abstracts are provided. The website provides instructions for using the powerful features and refining search.

A more consumer-oriented site at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is called MedlinePlus and is available at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/

Entering key words into the search facility at this site provides links to a variety of resources in addition to those at the NLM.

How can we have our site listed in ATForum.com “Related Web Sites” links?

AT Forum is always interested in linking to other websites that provide reliable and credible information of interest and benefit to our readers. Generally, such sites are sponsored by medical and healthcare agencies, institutions, research organizations, and associations. Commercial sites with the primary purpose of promoting specific products or services, and/or those presenting unsubstantiated opinions or viewpoints (that is, not thoroughly and properly citing supportive scientific evidence), would not qualify.

All qualifying sites are expected to follow the Health on the Net Foundation Code of Conduct (HONcode) for medical and health websites or similar self-regulatory best-practices principles. For reference, the HONcode may be accessed at: http://www.hon.ch/HONcode/

To have your site considered, send an e-mail message to feedback@atforum.com, including the URL of your site and a brief site description. You will be notified if your site is accepted for listing.
